Hi,
I recently got a Rayovac IC-3 charging system for christmas and am
wondering if there is really anything substantially different about the
IC3 batteries, and if not, how I could hack it to get it to charge my
old regular Ni-MH batteries in 15 minutes also.

There's a pressure sensor on the Rayovac batteries that reduces the
charger's current. Hacked batteries would dry up or, if they're cheap,
explode.

See the extra couple of contacts near the negative terminal? See the black
strip around the base of the battery near the negative end? Take out your
trusty DVM and check that black strip, you will find it is conductive.
Don't try hacking it. You will destroy your regular NiMH batteries if you
do. The IC3 batteries are different.

The IC3 batteries have temperature sensors that stop them from
overheating and exploding at such fast charge rates. You really
don't want to hack the charger to explode your non-IC3 batteries.

It would replace fireworks for new year, though... :-))) (a bit expensive,
maybe...)
