Compare i7 with xeon

We are configuring a system for audio recording with nuendo. Because we would like to use 2 processors which motherboard and processors are recommended.
Is a xeon E5XX better then a core i7, are there any benchmarks to compare ?

i7 can't be paired with another i7 on the same motherboard.

if you don't have a budget or plan on Overclocking your computer and plan to have it on almost all the time I would recommend the Xeon 5*** series.

You need a CPU with dual QPI link. i7s don't have dual QPI link so you need Xeons. E5620 is great if you're on a budget. The E5630 is also decent.

Also, the Xeon and i7 have the exact same architecture. A core i7 2.8GHz 4cores will perform the same as a Xeon 2.8GHz 4 cores, with the models you are looking at.

Like one-shot said, the difference is Xeons support multiple processors in one motherboard.
