When Dozer hits, I plan on building my first completely new rig in about 6 years. I'm looking to retire my veneralbe AMDFX 60 chip and Creative Audigy2 sound card. I know that there've been great improvements in on-board sound as of late but has it really advanced far enough for me to forego a "stand-alone" sound card? And if now what's the card to get?

Thanks in advance...

These days, on-board sound is quite good. And you are right about Creative being good cards.

I initially installed a Creative X-Fi card and heard no appreciable difference between it and the on-board sound. So, I returned the card for credit.

When you build your new rig, check out the on-board sound first. Then your decision will be an easy one.
