I have just brought a new laptop and whenever I unplug the power it goes
into a suspend / sleep mode which I cannot get out of :-(
In fact I have to remove the battery and reconect the power supply to do
anything.
Any ideas? I could do with some help on this.

Thanks

Check Control Panel/Power Options. It may be configured to suspend on
power-down. By the way, your post reads as though you were turning off the
power without logging out of Windows. Hope this is me mis-reading it?

Hi Barbelith,

Sounds like you have a bad battery or battery charging circuit. The
reason I say this is because when you unplug the mains, the battery
is at or below the setting for going into hibernate.

Did you make sure to fully charge the battery before trying it on
battery. It's rare that batteries come fully charged out of the box.

Will it boot up on battery power only?

If not, and assuming as you said the battery is charged, then get it
replaced. Even if you fiddle around with it you will never be able to
trust it on battery power.

Good laptops have monitor on battery. Furthermore, this is
but another reason why you have a simple and inexpensive tool
- a 3.5 digit multimeter. The meter is now a tool a standard
in the tool box as screwdriver and torqs wrench. Meter
reports charged state of battery. A charged battery would not
do what you are experiencing, except if....

Also inspect with a magnifying glass or equivalent the
battery contacts on battery and inside computer. The
slightest bend pin can cause failures.

Beyond this, we have arrived at the except if.... part.
Further exploratory surgery is not recommended without
manufacturer shop manual (including exploded diagrams). Its a
new laptop. Should have come with something like a full year
warranty. Get it fixed on their ticket - assuming it is a
responsible laptop manufacturer.

BTW, another tool that any responsible laptop manufacturer
provides for free - the comprehensive diagnostic. If not
available on their web site, well then you better have saved
significant money.
