Forum Motherboards & Memory : Memory Dell Dimension 8200

My Dell Dimension 8200 with 533 FSB came with 512 MB(2*256) ECC PC800 40ns RDRAM. It had 2 CRIMMs.
I recently got a pair of Elpida 512 RDRAMs with same specs as the original modules.

One difference is the prev chips which are Samsung had 256MB/8 printed on it and the new ones are Elpida with 512MB/16 on it.

My understanding is that these are the number of RDRAM devices in the module and its ok to have these as long am installing my memory in pairs.

The computer doesnt start after adding the new memory. The screen is just blank, the computer beeps for sometime then the beeping stops. Hitting the power button shuts it down.

It works fine with just the original memory and the CRIMMs but the new ones just doesnt work.

(INfo from CPU-Z)

BIOS version is A08
chipset is I850E
Motherboard is Dell DImension 8200

Any suggestions?

Does it work with only the new memory? Try each stick one at a time and then try several combinations. There's a chance a stick is bad.

You can also go into your bios and set all memory speeds to the slowest possible. There's a chance the memory can't run at the same speeds as the old stuff.

Hi there,

Also the DRAM for this unit can run with ECC or Non ECC.

Have purchased Non ECC DRAM for several 8200's I've upgraded using the old DRAM and a couple newer sticks, and they have always worked perfectly.

Check the old sticks to see on their label if they are ECC or Non ECC, possibly one set is ECC and the other Non ECC. You can't mix the two kinds.
