i have a customer built computer from cyber power pc inc the computer shuts down while i am play world of war craft the tech support people at cyber power siad i should try the power supply and upgrade it to at least an 800 wat power supply it currently has a 600watt supply and a gts 250 nvidia 1 gig video card it aslo has an i7 intel core process with 6 gigs of ram and a liquid cooling system. I have two concerns 1st should i upgrade the power supply and second would the power supply being that it is most likely defective damage the video card causing it to need replacing as well.

...800w PSU...i can't believe the crap they say or sell....actually I can

what 600w PSU do you have? just about any half way decent PSU will power a GTS 250, more then likely they stuck you with a junk one that can't even provide 400w

without actually looking at your PC, I can't tell. if the new PSU does not fix the issue then it very well may be a video card issue or something else. how new is the PC, how new is the issue?

frankly you don't need a 850w PSU. a 500w unit from antec, corsair, or seasonic would easily power your PC.

its under a year old they have a warrenty on it but they want me to ship it back to them and pay for the shipping and they keep it for two to three weeks just to put a power supply in it then they ship it back and pay for the return shipping i spent 60 bucks on the power supply and i would have spent the same on the shipping and they said they would not void the warrenty if it still had problems other then the power supply its been doing this problem for at least 3 months it used to only do it when i was tanking this one boss that had alot of graphically effects now since the 4.0 patch came out in WOW it has got worst i can just be standing around doing nothing in the game and the fan gets loud and then PC turns off

What exact brand and model PSU do you have? Not all manufacturers label their PSU's the same. Some may say 800w, but in reality they can only provide 400w of CONTINUOUS power, which is normally no name/ budget brands (for example http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/977 ). When you see an 800wPSU for $40 and another brand for $100, you know the cheaper brand is skimping out on something.

pay the extra and get this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168.... It delivers more amps on the 12v rails and is going for a steal at the moment. That xion psu is rated 850w max, not continuous and is what I would call a Generic brand. That xtreme brand sounds like lesser than generic. When will people learn about getting sh** PSU's?

point is, the people at cyber power that the guy spoke to, obviously dont know anything when they suggested an 800w PSU for the system. Like obsidian86 said, a good brand PSU in the 500w (continuous power) range is ample for your setup. The PSU I suggested is only really needed if you want to SLI with another gts250, but is much better than the rubbish 800w (peak power) xion. You should swap out your generic xtreme PSU for a decent brand though. Weather or not it will fix the problem your having is another issue...
