They recommend 550 watts 38amps combined on the +12 volt rail. Your power supply might have 18 amps max for each rail but it is not just adding them together. Usually they state max power from the combined 12volt rails in watts somewhere in the specs.
I suggest a new PSU minimum this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

I guess your PSU is about 500W, right?
Seeing you has 2x 12V rails with 18A on each, then you'll push that PSU to it's limit, agree with rolli59, upgrade your PSU... Do not cheap on PSU, it's the most important part on your system. :)

Never skimp on a PSUI recommend getting at least 750 PSU....especially with power and heat that the 470 puts out

don't think so, a 500w would be the minimum for a 5870

If your PSU has 360 watts or more for the +12volt rail combined it will run a HD5870. Adding up the rails like you did before is not the correct way. If you can not find it tell us the brand and model.
HD5870 is a big investment to risk running on a marginal PSU.

it'll run both 5850 and 5870 just fine, not sure about the gtx470.

i'd recommend the corsair tx650, it'll run gtx 470/480, 5870 and up to crossfire 5850s

GTX470 needs 38 amps according to manufacturers recommendation. Your coolermaster PSU is enough for a HD5870 which uses less power than GTX470. http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Palit/GeForce_GTX_47...

the page u mentioned......................i couldnt figure out the diff between peak & max power.........

and the watts given are for a single 12V rail i think......
so for gtx 470 its..........
peak - 171
max - 232

(How much can my psu supply ?? plz temme.......)

so i think my psu has just 18 A on 1 12v rail while 470 requires 19A............so it adds upto 38A...........

THATS BAD BAD BAD LUCK !!!!!!!!!!!

isnt it??!!!!!!............. just 1A diff !!!!!!!!(2 if u combine....)

5850 is best price/penformance right now, and if you care much about physx get a gt240 for $80 along with the 5850

All of those cheap 5850's don't have voltage control and will overclock like ass. There's no point to buy one without it. All 470's have voltage control and will overclock like a mofo

You can't say that like its fact, You and I both know every chip has different overclocking limits

My first HD5850 got to 922/1250 on stock voltage, but my second HD5850 only managed 805/1200. + not everyone overclocks and certainly not to the extent of wanting to mess around with voltages.

but if you add the 90c+ temperatures and that the OP would have to change his psu for it, the 5850 makes alot more sense.

now go fry an egg or something on your 470s.

top out 50C ON WATER. with stock cooler it'll go over 85c if you want to keep noise down, and even more if you have crap airflow.

all reviews from all sites have about the same temperature readings

No! The card recommendations ask for 600watt with 38amps available for the +12 volt rail.

im talking about the reference one , it's at 92c.

the custom cooled one is $360,that's $70 expensiver than the 5850. and if you add a new psu to that...

no thanks, i'll go 5850

Point taken but the 470 lays a hurting on the 5850 in every game at high res so why would people spend almost 300 dollars on a 5850 when a 470 is better?

5850 is grosely overpriced now since fermi was released.

Yes the GTX470 is faster than a HD5850, however not everyone's PC is suited to a GTX470, you need a quality 600W PSU and a well ventilated case. I can run my reference HD5850 at 30% fan speed and keep the temps below 72C under kombuster and thats in a Corsair Obsidian 800D which as you may or may not know is crap for air cooling.

I know alot of the people here on Toms are in the US, but not everyone a GTX470 is £55 (or $83) more that a HD5850 (comparing the cheapest HD5850 against the cheapest GTX470).

If a person has a good enough PSU and case, and doesn't mind the heat, power usage and noise (if they choose a reference GTX470) then I agree its the better buy in the US.

ok guys......thnks for all d info.............(though more info=more confusion)..........

so i think i'll go with 5870.............and a nvidia small card for physX..........betwn.......is a gts 250 cheaper or a nvidia 9400/9500/9800 ???????
wich should i use as a just for physx standby card ????? and will my processor/mobo & psu support it ???

amd phenom ii x4 965 be and asus m4a785td-v evo wich has hybrid xfire support and an onboard HD 4200

from this review, you can see the 5850 penforms better than the gtx470 at 1680x1050. aswell as at 2560x 1600.

fermi gives same penformance, while being a power hog, overheating and on top of that, expensiver.

isn't the gtx 470 supposed to " lay hurt at higher rez"???? the 5850 is still better at 2560x1600, and at 1680x1050 there won't be a noticeable difference neither.

you won't be running ANY high end gpu on a 430w psu.

upgrade to atleast 500w higher quality psu, and you'll be able to run a 5870 WITHOUT the physx card.

upgrade to 650w and you'll run any single card in the market, and even up to dual 5850s if you'd like to crossfire later on.

highest you could run on your current psu would be a 5770 or equivalent.

as for the psu brand either corsair, antec or seasonic will make a worthy buy. just stay away from generic psus, no matter the wattage.

How so? The GTX470 is slightly higher on the min's and the same on the average so how is the 5850 somehow "better", by those numbers they are pretty much the same with a slight advantage going to the GTX.
