Graphics Card Upgrade

I have an XFX nvidia Geforce 1gb 9500GT, but i feel that its rubbish against the upcoming generation of games and software (especially when i work on the after effects it always crashes)so do you recommend me to upgrade it to the ATI HD 5000 series or a nvidia GTX series so i can get the best of both worlds graphic designing without crashes & mouth dropping gaming performance (I want to run games like crysis with good AA,and make the rendering in after effects very fast) My budget:300$

The 9500GT was rubbish for games when it 1st came out. 1GB is a waste on something that slow.

What resolution do you play games in? What is your budget?
