looking for a decent SSD recently and try to upgrade my notebook but
just read an article from French website and it shows SSD had 40% return rate,
this really scares me.....

- Intel 0.45% (against 1.73%)
- Samsung 0,48% (N/A) - Samsung 0.48% (N / A)
- Corsair 1,05% (contre 2,93%) - Corsair 1.05% (against 2.93%)
- Crucial 1,11% (contre 0,82%) - Crucial 1.11% (against 0.82%)
- OCZ 5,02% (contre 7,03%) - OCZ 5.02% (against 7.03%)

There are many changes from the previous semester! Premièrement Crucial, précédemment premier, chute à la 4è place. Crucial First, before first fall in 4th place. The failure rate increased slightly although still low, but it is now surpassed by Corsair which has a rate of return much higher, by Samsung that landed in 2nd position in our statistics and Intel takes a first position that he had reached in the past.

The OCZ are still in last place overall, but with a rate of return which is finally falling. This rate actually hides large disparities ranges. The most popular ranges, namely the Vertex 3 and Agility 3, fared relatively well indeed, with respectively 1.51% and 2.03% rate of return. Certains modèles ont par contre été tout bonnement catastrophiques et OCZ truste le classement des taux de retour supérieurs à 5% : Some models have been simply devastating against OCZ truste and the classification rate of return greater than 5%:

- 40,00% OCZ Petrol 64 Go - 40.00% OCZ Petrol 64GB
- 39,42% OCZ Petrol 128 Go - 39.42% OCZ Petrol 128GB
- 30,85% OCZ Octane 128 Go SATA II - 30.85% OCZ Octane 128 GB SATA II
- 29,46% OCZ Octane 64 Go SATA II - 29.46% OCZ Octane SATA II 64GB
- 9,73% OCZ Vertex 2 120 Go 3.5" - 9.73% OCZ Vertex 2 120GB 3.5 "
- 9,59% OCZ Vertex 2 120 Go - 9.59% OCZ Vertex 2 120GB
- 6,73% OCZ Vertex 2 60 Go - 6.73% OCZ Vertex 2 60GB
- 5,43% OCZ Agility 3 240 Go - 5.43% OCZ Agility 3 240GB
- 5,12% OCZ Vertex Plus 128 Go - 5.12% OCZ Vertex Plus 128GB

With rates of return of 30-40%, the OCZ Octane and Petrol SATA II (SATA III are more reliable, 3.78% for the 128 GB model, for example) have a dismal record of failure rate highest ever statements since we set these statistics. At this level, we may simply speak of a hidden defect and it is shameful that such goods have remained in business!

Solution
Those really bad examples are cheaper and older drives from OCZ, which are generally not recommended. Their newer drives are better, and obviously other brands are also better. Samsung are the typical recommendation since their drives combine performance, reliability and pretty reasonable prices.

Plextor, Crucial, and Corsair are pretty good too though. As are Intel if you're okay with paying a premium for the brand name.

That French web site has published similar articles in the past. The OCZ Petrol, Octane, and Vertex 2 ssd's are not modern 3rd generation SATA 3 6Gb/s ssd's. They are old drives that are no longer in production.

For performance and reliability I normally recommend Samsung. Samsung has a stellar track record. Crucial is another brand worth considering.

I maintain the ssd database listed in the sticky at the very top of this ssd forum section. The ssd database is up to date as of yesterday. Here is the link:

Scroll down to the brands and models you are interested in and follow the links to the technical reviews.

As mentioned above. Those ARE OLD drives and 2+ generations old.

Go buy yourself a Samsung 840 Pro, Intel 520, Corsair GTX or OCZ Vector SSD and enjoy :)

PS. if it would help, we have replaced most if not all of our HDDs at work for Intel 520s and no issues since day one (more than a year now since the 520s were launched)
