Just trying to get him a rig that will run new gen games on full settings. not sure about the resolution. He's got a 32" 720p hdtv that is going to be hooked up to his video card via hdmi. Not sure if he could set the resolution higher than the native resolution of the tv.

I had great FPS with a 9800GT on a 32" 720p with HDMI.
DirectX 10, OpenGL 2.1
Should be good for future games for a long time.

Nooooo~~ OP dont get 9800GT for FFXIV. You will be chewed up and spit out! I would reccomdend at least gtx 460, or 470 if you can afford.

As for CPU i5 760 can be had for $170 if you have a microcenter near you. Combo that with the gig

great start at least

XIV is a power hungry game. It will likely be the new game to include in future Toms reviews for benchmarking.

I have a Core 2 Duo E6600 overclocked to 3.0Ghz. I just upgraded to a GTX460 1G overclocked to 800Mhz Core, 2Ghz Memory. I have 4 Gb PC2-6400 memory overclocked to PC2-6666.

I'm getting 15-20 fps average with stutters down to ~5 fps in FF XIV. Other games run great.
