Do I need to update bios or is the CPU not compatible?

Forum CPU & Components : CPUs Do I need to update bios or is the CPU not compatible?

Hello,
After reading some of the forum Q&A's they seem to refer to flashing bios on a new install.
I have been having problems with my PC as it keeps rebooting. I have a ASUS MB and the error seems to be CPU over clocking system failure. My bios is set to default. I decided that the CPU has gone bad and bought one that would be compatible or so I thought. The old CPU is a P4 2.8MHZ. According to the manufacture's manual the mb would also support the then up and coming Prescott CPU. The CPU I purchased is a Prescott 3.4MHZ L3 1m CPU. Now when I try to reinstall the OS I get the blue screen of death. Should I be updating the BIOS or is the L3 cache a problem with my mb. The MB is a ASUS P4c800e-deluxe. Any ideas?

should have updated BIOS first...
always update BIOS with older chip first then install new chip.
