Here's the deal, I have windows 7 Ultimate x64 installed build 7600.16539. I have a Ati 5970 and I have been trying to install Ati catalyst 10.6 drivers with no success. Everything installs and when it reboots the system hangs (microsoft screen comes up and as soon as it tries to go into windows black screen ). I have been using RC drivers since january as these are the only thing i can get to install without the system hanging. I have even re-installed Windows 7 and flashed my mainboard to the lastest bios. Please help my main system has been down for over 6 weeks i'm turning to the experts here for help. Could my video card need a flash? just a though.

my system specs

i7 920 @ 4.20 GHZ
6 GB of corsair Dominator ram
P6T V2 mainboard 1003 bios
Ati 5970 OEM ( not sure of bios )
300 GB Velicoraptor ( main drive )
F1 Spin 1000 gb ( back up drive )

Sure you are installing the 64 bit drivers for Windows 7? There are separate drivers for each OS and for 64/32 bit. You should choose Desktop graphics, then Radeon Hd series, then Radeon HD 5xxx series, then Windows 7 64 bit from the following link:

Edit: You mention you are using the RC drivers, you don't mean you are using the Windows 7 RC are you? Because the newer drivers no longer work on the release candidate version of Windows 7.

Yes sir... I have made sure they were the right drivers. I found another guy that had a similar issue. He has not been able to install drivers since the 9.12 drivers were released his guess was that because he has a Engineering sample the bios wasn't compatable with current drivers. I also have a ES of the 5970. Sounds like I might have to flash i'm a little worried about flashing a 700 dollar card.
