Which processor for this rig?

I've pretty much decided on the following mobo, graphics card, and ram but I can't make up my mind about the cpu. I'm using the build for video encoding. I'm looking for the CPU that's won't create a bottleneck for the system and won't be overkill.

  1. what is your budget?

don't go with that mobo, it is open box and you never know if they work or not, they are also non refundable

    Sapphire Radeon 5770......150

    total: 439
  2. Be 100% sure that your encoding software/apps take advantage of GPU acceleration 1st. If they dun it's easy as pie :P

    1055T+ 880G/IGP chipset
  3. Thanks guys, you've both given me a lot to think on.

I've got a case, psu, os, & hd already. I was hoping to spend $450 for the remaining bits.

The encoding software I use now seems to use all 4 cores of my Q6600. I'm not sure about 6 cores tho.

I'm building a new machine because my son needs a new computer. I'm gonna keep the new build for myself & give him my old machine.

OK, you've talked me out of the open box mobo. I misunderstood the warranty policy.

With the gigabyte 880 mobo & the sapphire video card, would the choke point be a 955 Phenom quad?

I had kinds set an upper limit of $475. The 105ST will put me into the $530 range after rebates. However if the 955 is the choke point I can rationalize it to the spouse.
