I've pretty much decided on the following mobo, graphics card, and ram but I can't make up my mind about the cpu. I'm using the build for video encoding. I'm looking for the CPU that's won't create a bottleneck for the system and won't be overkill.

Open Box: MSI 870A-G54 AM3 AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

Thanks guys, you've both given me a lot to think on.

I've got a case, psu, os, & hd already. I was hoping to spend $450 for the remaining bits.

The encoding software I use now seems to use all 4 cores of my Q6600. I'm not sure about 6 cores tho.

I'm building a new machine because my son needs a new computer. I'm gonna keep the new build for myself & give him my old machine.

OK, you've talked me out of the open box mobo. I misunderstood the warranty policy.

With the gigabyte 880 mobo & the sapphire video card, would the choke point be a 955 Phenom quad?

I had kinds set an upper limit of $475. The 105ST will put me into the $530 range after rebates. However if the 955 is the choke point I can rationalize it to the spouse.
