System unstable when using DVD drive

I just built a system myself, using a Gigabyte GA-P55-UD6 motherboard and a Lite-On DVD drive. I have random system hangs or blue screens, always related to using the DVD drive. Reads are usually ok, Writes never work, inserts/ejects sometimes cause hangs; even displaying the driver information caused a hang at one time. As long as I'm not messing with the DVD drive, the system is perfectly stable.

I would suspect a driver problem, but the driver is just the vanilla cdrom.sys that is built into Windows, and Lite-On has no other.

The OS is Windows Server 2008 R2.

Does anyone have a guess at what might be going on?
