Triple Core vs Quad Core

I recently purchased the ASUS M4A89TD PRO/USB3, and I am somewhat torn over which CPU to get price wise a Triple Core Black Edition Phenom II is about the same as a Athlon II X4. I know the Athlon has the extra core and no L3 cache but then again I assume the BE chip clocks higher. How comparable are these chips?
