had this post before but for some reason it gone from the group so here it
is again....

have just a small problem here......
recently when i try to connect to a server and a map tries to download, the
screen kind of like "flashes" quickly and it says "version mismatch" and it
wont connect....
the thing is, even if its a map i already have, lets say face just for
example, it still does it....
so why is this happening? how can i fix it?
i remember something said awhile back when i had the same problem about
deleting some kind of de. file somewhere and then it would redownload all ok
but i can remember where it is or even if its the right file....

help?

If you can catch the name of the map/file that is causing the mismatch,
just remove it from your files and it will download again. Of course
you may run into a mismatch on that map later when going to a different
server too.

If you can't, check your logfile.

The mismatch might not be the map. The last time I had this it was a
texture file and a sound file. Check those too.

well i did all that you suggested, this map for instance, face 2 (the one
with the high towers) said version de mismatch
i went into the system folder, then maps, then deleted the face 2 map
went back into the server and it downloaded.....BUT...
when it got to the 99% range and as i was waiting for it to connect like
normal, the screen flickered
and the same thing happened, version mismatch...

It's not the map file, it's the de.u file in your UT/system folder.

It has to be there or UT won't run (from everything that I know). In
your Unreal Tournament folder, there should be the following folders
(among other files)...

Cache
Help
Logs
Maps
Music
NetGamesUSA.com
ReadMe
Sounds
System
Textures
Web

If the file "De.u" is not in your System folder, then it's probably
still in the Cache with some really long, convoluted name, in which
case you will need to either clean you cache or look in the "cache.ini"
file to find out which one of those files is the De.u file.

It doesn't have to be a map, it could also be a texture file (I've run
into a few of those).

Or search your "UnrealTournament.log" file for the file's name that is
causing the mismatch.

http://www.veloffdesigns.com/utmac/problems.asp <-- find the cache
cleaner here if you don't have one.

Then it's in the cache.

Close UT.
Open \UnrealTournament\Cache\Cache.ini with notepad

Search for "DE.U" or "DE.INT" (I forget which it is)
Delete that whole line.

(You can also delete the file associated with it, but you don't need to
unless you want to wipe space).

Renaming or deleting the cache folder will also work, 'cos then UT
restarts - but that means you lose all the maps you downloaded before,
unless you run utCacheCleaner or similar first.

ARRRRG. I have the same issues all the time. Welcome to the early times of
a product revision that we can all refer to in a few years as /when things
were rotten./

FWIW, namespace/version collisions are just always the fault of the
designer, at least in the old UT. Whenever I create a map, I make sure that
/every freaking thing/ has a version number next to it. It can even be as
simple as an integer:

UT99:

DM_[NaCN]DeathGrip_3.unr
NaCN_RunScript_4
DeathGripMonsters_33

etc.

I'm assuming that the namespace is also the way that UT2k4 determines a
match? In which case, that seems like a version number technique is still
worthwhile...

Sometimes shutting down UT2k? and restarting/connecting back to the same
server works fine. I haven't figured out what causes it.

Remember that running a cache utility without paying attention as to /what/
you're doing can move the de mod directly into ut\system, and you'll have to
delete it there then as well.

(I mean, you'll have to delete it there /again/ as well.)
