I am working on a new build and most components are set. I'll be pushing a I7 920 to 4.0 with a tuniq tower 120 extreme, my motherboard is the Asus P6X58D Premium. Memory is undecided but it will be ddr3 1600, all within an antec 1200 with maximum fans. Monitor wise I have 2 HP 2509m monitors which are 25inch 1920x1080..

The debate is between a ROG Matrix 5870($520) vs a Asus 5970($699) ONLY. So obviously the 5970 is a more beastly card than the Matrix 5870 but both monitors run at a max res of 1920x1080. With eyefinity ill be running 3840x1080. Which leads me to my question, will the 5970 just be waste of power for these resolutions because its capable of much more than i will be giving to it and I question if i am taking it to the resolutions that the other cards stumble at. If the ROG Matrix overclocked will keep me in the same performance range for those resolutions then ill go that route, and it is $180 less on newegg. Ultimately, I am speaking of real world performance not theoretical benchmarks. Please help me in my decision. Thank you

HD5970 is a better value for $700 than any HD5870 for $520! Running a resolution of 3840 x 1080 I think you will be happier with the HD5970.

I forgot to mention that I will be going crossfire a few months down the road.

A 5970 IS 2 5870's crossfired.
Second, you won't be sniping anytime soon looking at 2 inches of plastic, with 2 monitor's you'll be staring in the middle, and that's plastic unless you take off the cover.

Dual 5970's is a waste. Don't go over 2 GPU's, get dual 5870's if you want to get the most out of a CF setup. You should not need more than a good pair of 5870's for eye-finity unless you are actually going to buy triple 30" screens.
