External hard disk got corrupted

my Toshiba 650gb external hard disk got corrupted and asking for format it. how can retrieve my hard disk without losing my data

right click on hdd
properties
choose tools tab
then choose checkdisk
then check the both option
then press ok
it will check the hdd immediately or after windows restart
