Are insulation spacers necessary?

Hello,

I recently built a PC and it's been running good for a few months.
I was helping my friend build his, and realized that I didn't put in the "insulation spacers" (the little O-shaped, cloth-like rings that go before putting in the screws to hold the mobo from the top), when I mounted my mobo.

If you don't know what I'm talking about.. It's these:

Seeing that it runs fine without it, I guess it's ok, but I'm wondering if it is usually considered an important step when building a PC.

Thank you!
