Processor speed isn't the most important thing.

A Centrino Prozessor 1,7 Ghz can do the same work as a desktop P IV
2,5 , due to its smaller architecture and the bigger cache Memory on
the DIE.

If you want to go for gaming, the type of the graphics card is much
more important, the mobile Radeon 9700 graphic cards are similar to
actual cheap destop ones, better graphic cards consume exponential
more power which means the battery uptime is significant shorter and
they need to have a cooling fan running nearly all the time.
Next thing is the size of your memory. The bigger the better, I
recommend at least 712 MB of it.

If you don't intend on gaming actual 3 D Games a Centrino Laptop is
the better choice.
