I'm on the market for one also. But I want one that also has a wide
screen. So far I found a HP Pavilion series zv5000z
<http://www.shopping.hp.com/>

I also looked at the eMachines M6810
<http://www.e4me.com/products/products.html?prod=eMachines_M6810>
but have read mixed reports about their quality.

Both laptops can be checked out at BestBuys to see if you like the
look and feel of the keyboard.Their prices are fairly close to online
prices except by not having to pay the tax, it'll be a lot cheape
buying online ;-)
I'm leaning toward the HP right now.

(Shipping is a lot less than a 7% tax!!)

If you don't want a widescreen then just type 'amd64 laptop' into any
search engine and you'll get lots of hits!

The emachines AMD64 line has been consolidated into the Gateway M7405GX
(emachines and Gateway merged about a year ago) The only well established
quality problem with those machines has been cracked hinges, which were
eventually redesigned to eliminate the problem. All the machines sold
under the "Gateway" brand have the new hinges. The only performance issue
is the drive, which is a 4200 RPM 80 gig model--it can be easily replaced
with a 7200 RPM 60 gb for about $120.

There are some of even the 7405GX hinge COVERS cracking. I have an m6809
that I had the hinge covers replaced on and thus far have had no problems.
The hinge cover crack is purely cosmetic and does not effect the
functionality in any way of the hinge. You will not find a better machine
for the money than the m68xx/7405gx line. You can read tons of information
about the machines in general and the hinge cover issue at
notebookforums.com in the Gateway/Emachines section.

As for the HP model, if you are going to be doing any kind of gaming or GPU
intesive tasks, stay far, far away. The GPU in that machine is ancient.

You can still get the M68XX laptops, and with some sweet rebates at
times too. I just got my partner's mother an M6810 for a VERY low
price.

Check into the Gateway 7405GX at Best Buy. It is the same machine. Two ways
to look at the machine:

1. m6809 with a faster burner and ultrabright screen.

2. m6810 with a DVD Burner, bigger HD, and ultrabrite screen.

At Best Buy, who seem to always have the best selection and best rebates
for Emachines laptops. They had like 5 different models available.
This was about a month and a half ago.

Please reread my post to which you responded. Especially the statement "The
emachines AMD64 line has been consolidated into the Gateway M7405GX
(emachines and Gateway merged about a year ago)?"

I though you meant that one could still find m6810 branded machines for a
very low price.

Since it's possible to register and obtain an extended service contract that
also covers screen breakage on the emachines branded machine from the
emachines site but neither the gateway or the emachines site recognizes the
7405GX this is not a trivial distinction.

By the way, I'm typing this on a 7405GX.

Hi ya all
please be carefull when bying 64bit laptops
as they all come with 32bit O/S and as such are not covered under warranty
with 64bit O/S (when they come out).
so if ur sound dont work or touch pad goes funny with 64bit O/S
all u will get from there repair centres is tuff luck (unless ur realy
lucky)

Unless the laptop u buy has 64bit O/S at the time u buy it

Just thought u should all Know

Hope this Helps

From your response, it sounds like you checked recently and found none.
In which case, my response is, Wow!

OTOH, the pictures of the M7405GX on the BestBuy web site does look,
well, identical to the M68XX machines, I mean REALLY identical.

Does ANY laptop have a warranty that a future OS version will work on it?

So put the 32-bit OS back when you send it in for repair.

> so if ur sound dont work or touch pad goes funny with 64bit O/S

So what? Any time you put any OS on a machine other than the one that came
on it you're on your own. Repair centers fix hardware problems, not OS
compatibility problems. If you can't troubleshoot your own OS problems
then you should stay far away from the bleeding edge.

Now, do you know of any specific cases of sound not working or touchpads
going funny on any currently shipping 64-bit laptop with 64-bit Windows or
64-bit Linux or any other available 64-bit OS or are you just blowing hot
air?

> Unless the laptop u buy has 64bit O/S at the time u buy it

You mean like <http://linuxcertified.com/linux-laptop-lc2464.html>, which
runs it with the same limitations as the Gateway and emachines AMD64
laptops and less well than the Hewlett-DECPaquard machines with nvidia
video.

Who do you expect it to help? A classic example of a true statement that
has no utility.

.... and both are made by ARIMA. It's their W730-K8 model.
Except you can't find that brand here in the US ;-(

In Germany it's the Targa Visionary 811!

| By the way, I'm typing this on a 7405GX.

It wasn't me that said you could still get it at a very low price. I was
just offering an alternative/virtually identical machine. Congrats on your
purchase <wink>.

|
| That's because other than the BIOS and some trim they _are_. Gateway and
| e-machines merged a while back. The combined company is no longer selling
| AMD64 laptops under the emachines brand, instead they are selling them as
| "Gateway" and instead of having three different models they now have one.
| But it is the same Arima model that was formerly sold as the emachines
| m6800 series.
|

Actually there are two. CompUSA sells a stripped down version. 7410GX.

| ... and both are made by ARIMA. It's their W730-K8 model.
| Except you can't find that brand here in the US ;-(
|
| In Germany it's the Targa Visionary 811!
|

Also Voodoo m:860, Medion Ram 2010, AccessMicro AI-730, and ACI Alevia are
all the Arima w730-K8.
