Hello and welcome to the forums
Yes you can,X3440 is a great CPU and can handle CS5 fine, make sure you have enough RAM too.

Thanks Maziar

I have selected an DP55WG motherboard and 8GB of RAM, does this sound like a suitable system for a graphic designer creatin 2D and 3D images?

Can you offer any tips on the type of graphics card I should be looking for?
Is an 800w PSU suitable for this system?

800W is probably complete overkill.

Do you have a discrete graphics card? if not, a decent 450W will do you. Corsair CX450 for example.

Yes,8GB RAM along with Intel Xeon x3440 can handle CS5 perfectly fine.
As for VGA,well it depends, are you going to play games too ? if so then on what resolution ?
and as mi1ez mentioned,800W+ is probably overkill, unless you want to use 2 high-end cards in SLI/CF
