I just recently built a new PC and have just installed Windows 7 but however I noticed something interesting when configuring my RAID array.. my system spec is below
Core i7 3930k @ 3.8Ghz w/ Noctua NH-D14 cooler
ASUS Rampage IV Extreme
Corsair Vengeance LP 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR3 1600Mhz kit
eVGA GTX 560
2 x 256GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD in RAID 0
WD 1TB Velociraptor 10K RPM HDD w/ 64MB cache
Corsair AX1200i power supply
CoolerMaster Cosmos II case
When I was configuring the SSDs in the RAID setup, each individual 256GB SSD drive showed up with 238.4GB usable capacity (which is correct in computer terms). However when I put them together in RAID, my total usable space only came to 453.1GB instead of 476.8GB.
This is my first time using SSDs and I have always used RAID 0 setups in the past and have decided to continue that trend.
Is the loss of 23GB something normal? I never observed any loss of space when combining 2 HDDs in RAID 0, so if anyone has an idea about this, please let me know.. its not a huge deal for me but I want to know the details of this for my knowledge..
