How to fix a inaccessible drive

Hello,

I have a problem with my WD Passport external hard drive. Basically after an accidental shut down of my pc, while it was on the the usb port, is not recognized in my Windows Vista. When I try to open it, this message appears: "You need to format the disk before you can use it". Also it shows 0 used space and 0 free space. What can I do to fix it?

Thank you very much for your time!!

  1. If you need the data, I would give the freeware program MBRWizard a try at it -- if it is a corrupt MBR, it can often be fixed: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Boot-Manager-Disk/MB-Wizard.shtml

If you don't need the data just reformat.
