At the office Christmas party there was an accident. Dropped my Optio
S4 and the battery came flying out. Now the camera makes a beeping
noise when I try to power it up, the power light turns on for a second
or two and it powers off. Also, the lens is stuck in the extended
position. It's no longer under any kind of warranty and I'm somewhat
handy doing small repairs. Anyone have an idea of something relatively
simple that I might try to fix the camera? Also, any repair book
recommendation appropriate for beginners would be greatly appreciated.

Replace camera. You are lucky, some accidents at office Christmas
parties aren't that easy (or cheap) to fix.

Does your Household Goods Insurance policy have an 'All Risks'
extension to cover valuables away from the home?

Save the insurance for when it is needed. Why risk increased rates over a
camera that is only a few hundred dollars?

If there is no cosmetic damage, just send it back to Pentax and tell them it
just "died."

Good luck!

It might be possible that the camera needs to reset itself. Try leaving the
battery out for several hours. (To be sure, charge it while you're waiting.)
When you put it back, it might take two or three on/off cycles for the camera
to recalibrate itself and retract the lens.

DO NOT FORCE the lens. If it doesn't move under the camera's power, some
mechanical linkage may be disconnected or jammed inside. It is very unlikely
you can fix it yourself unless you have camera repair experience.

Pentax USA has a web site that lists an 800 number. You might ask them for
advice on getting it fixed. Ask if they have a flat rate deal where they
either fix it or send a reconditioned replacement. Then you can decide if you
should spend the money on a newer model instead.

Thanks, that sounds reasonable.

Idiots like you are the reason why warranty coverage has become so poor.
