Time To Upgrade

Hey Guys,

I just want some advice please, I want to upgrade my GPU but am finding it hard to choose between either the ATI 5850 or the 5870? I currently have an Nvidia 9800GX2 installed and wondered if the difference in price between those 2 cards is woth it for the difference in performance?

My rig is a Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R with a Core i7 930 and 6gb of OCZ DDR3 at 1333mhz I play all the obvious FPS like Crysis and Crysis Warhead etc, and just want to know if in your opinion is the upgrade worth it? And is the GX2 old hat now?!

Many thanks in advance!!!!

  1. The GX2 is still a good GPU on level or better than HD5770 GTX260. Upgrade to HD5850 or HD5870 will be based on your resolution. HD5850 handles everything well at 1920 x 1080.
  2. Thanks for your response!!

I currently play in 1680 x 1050 so does that mean in your opinion a 5850 would be sufficient for my needs? Or would the 5870 prove to be the better card in the long term?!

    Thanks again!!!
  3. your current card can handle 1680x1050 very well, why the urge to upgrade?
  4. The HD5850 would be sufficient, the price difference between the cards is greater than the performance difference and the HD5850 is a great overclocker.
  5. I just want to put a card into my machine which will bring the whole system right up to date, don't get me wrong I am not complaining about the way it is at the moment, but prior to getting the new CPU etc, I was debating whether or not to just upgrade the GPU, I have since put away the money for a new card, and as I am not as technically minded as I would like to be I just wanted some good sound advice!!!

I take it I am throwing away my money and there is no need for an expensive new card? I assume there would be a noticeable difference in performance between not only the 5850 but especially the 5870?
  6. Although your card is not listed here http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/HIS/HD_5850_iCooler_V_Turbo/29.html you can figure out the performance difference based on GTX260 up to HD5850/70
  7. Thank you very much!!!

just because you can upgrade does not mean you should. The 5850 and 5870 are great cards but ATI will have new ones out this fall heading into the holidays. If there is no game that you can't enjoy then I would wait for the new cards to be released. Now if there is a game that you can't enjoy, it brings up a different issue.

Trust me, no secret levels, weapons, or bosses open up when you raise your FPS from 65FPS to 75FPS ;)
