From a consumer desktop standpoint, here are some different types.
Brands: Intel, AMD (that's it actually)
Current or Recent Sockets:
Intel: LGA 775, 1156, 1356 upcoming: 1155, 2011
AMD: AM2, AM2+, AM# upcoming: AM3+

If this isn't what you are looking for, let me know.

Theres also Via but they are usually in small form factor (SFF) boards such as ITX, typically integrated (soldered) onto the motherboard and used in small projects such as a car pc.

and ETK meant AM3, not AM#

Judging from the name, newcomer status and the exam type question, my guess is this is someone who is posting this question during an exam trying to get an answer. The problem is we have no idea what the teacher is looking for. Brands? Sockets? Instructions? The answer could be something as simple as RISC vs CISC. Without knowing what they've been studying we have no way of knowing.

Usually the question gets posted with the OP never coming back. Why should he, the exam is over by the time he gets an answer. Probably best off just locking the thread.

Agree fully. 99% of the time the OP that asks a question like this never comes back.
