Mouse not working in Windows

Last response: in Windows 7
Share

Hey,

I'm trying to troubleshoot this but am having no luck. I'm running Windows 7 and when it gets to the login screen the mouse doesn't work, I *think* the keyboard works because it works in the BIOS but have no need to use the keyboard until I can use the mouse to click on one of the user names. I also can't boot into safe mode without it loading about 1/2 way and then the computer restarts. If I run startup repair it tells me "Windows cannot repair this computer automatically" and says that it's because of a AutoFailover. There was a BIOS mismatch error a few days ago but I haven't seen anything since and am not sure what that would've affected. If I boot a Windows recovery disc the mouse and keyboard work fine but not if I attempt to boot normal. This system has been running with zero issues since December.

Thanks,
Matt

So, guessing, it's a USB mouse. Guessing your've tried plugging in to different USB sockets. Guessing you've tried swapping with another mouse. Is the red laser light active? Under normal conditions, you can plug in a mouse and even at the login screen, Windows will detect the mouse after a minute or so.

Yeah, sorry should've mentioned that it was a USB. I've tried it in different sockets and tried different USB mice, cordless, corded and none worked. Thinking it may have just been a USB mouse issue I even dug out an old ps2 mouse and even that didn't work. The laser is active so I guess the mouse is getting power just not working in Windows. I did mention that it worked in recovery mode, I even unplugged and plugged mice then to see what would happen and they all worked. Is there a generic Windows mouse driver that may have gotten corrupt somehow?

I was able to boot up once or twice when this first started and there were issues showing up in the USB section of the device manager. Wondering if this is related to a Windows Update gone bad OR something my BIOS. It did have that BIOS mismatch error on boot up the other day. All of the troubleshooting I've read mentions to "update the BIOS". Would the BIOS cause something like this though? There was only one BIOS revision higher than mine that I could see. This is a Gigabyte MB.
