Why are my bots so stupid and theirs so smart?

Post refers to original UT, as this is not the UT2kX newsgroup.

It's amazing. I play on blue team in single player Carry the Flag
games. Me and three bots against four bots. Mostly trying out
amateur maps to decide if they're worth keeping.

One of their bots will grab my flag and return to base while I'm still
trying to figure out where in hell I am. My bots, meanwhile, are
guarding an empty flag base, or defending a point that's miles away
from the flag or the enemy attack route. (If I let my bots attack the
enemy base, they'll usually get killed in a showdown with the enemy
flag carrier.)

However, when I do manage to grab the enemy flag, the enemy bots will
constantly respawn along my escape route, or will get to my base ahead
of me.

As I said, these are amateur map makers maps. I can't imagine that
there are that many map makers who will cheat for one side. There are
a few maps where one teams paths were obviously inferior or left out
altogether.

And what's with these bot replication maps. There's two or three bots
for each bot that's supposed to be in the game. And I don't get
replicated, so my team is short. One of the ctf-Thorns maps did this.
It would have been a good map if not for the replication.

Different bots have different skills, one of them (I forget which, been a
long time since I've fired up the original UT) has accuracy of 100 (never
misses) other bots may have other high settings (I'm pretty sure you can
see the settings in one of the ini files).

As to the second issue, I have no clue.

Loki - never misses. -

OP should consider giving his bots commands - Like "take the flag" - "defend
the base" etc. Bots usually do what they are told. If they follow
commands, they might be a little more helpful to the OP's cause.

CTF-Thorns I don't remember anything like that. I used to play that map
very often on a couple of Matrix servers.

And - DeadMan - Fire Up UT. I played some DM tonight. Had a great time.
It was a nice break from FarCry, MOHPA, Doom3, and HalfLife2 that have taken
up so much of my time the last few months.

I've played every new game that has come out for a long time now... I
really love the responsiveness of UT comapared to all of them. If
PainKiller would have had "dodge", it might have come close to having that
"clean, responsive movement" feel to it that UT has, but it didn't. There
is just something about UT that nothing else has ever been able to quite
live up to.

Go play an hour on some public servers and get the same reminder :)

Yeah, I miss it. Gotta make some time to reinstall. My kid does lan
parties at school all the time...man, I envy her.

Methinks you meant Loque.

I found this out the hard way when I was against him in instagib. You can
change the settings within the GUI by choosing the 'Bots' tab and then
'Configure' - I think there are slider bars in there for a few things incl
accuracy.

I thought it was Archon that had the deadly aim?

Maybe, but Loque has nearly 100% on all the settings.

Ah. A more well-rounded bot. Good for him. :p

Not good for you if you're "vs it" though. ;)

Tamerlane's favored weapon is the sniper rifle, and it shows. Get him in a
sniper arena at Experienced level or higher, and you'll notice the huge
difference in skill. He can go dominating or better against the other bots
on most difficulty settings.

Loque (24 or 25) has an accuracy of 1.0. Tamerlane (18 or 19) has
0.9.

But neither bot is in the game; I'm only using the first 7 bots.
Cryss, Aryss, and Nikita are on my team, and the other team is Archon,
Alarik, Dessloch, and Drimacus. (I'm more comforable shooting male
bots than female. In deathmatch, I usually change Aryss to a Skaarj
and Cryss to a Boss or Nali. If the map's big enough for 8 or more
players, I'll usually play team deathmatch.)

There is Thorns, Thorns][, Thornsv2, Thornsv3, Thornsv4, Thornsv6, and
Thornsv8. (Wonder where 5 and 7 are.) Thorns 6 is under water, and
it's nearly impossible to move. The bot replication may only occur in
single player practice mode.

The bots all have default orders. (Me, Aryss, Cryss, and Nikita
against Archon, Alaraik, Drimacus, and Dessloch.) Nikita goes after
the enemy flag, Cryss defends our flag, and Aryss comes looking for
me. I usually try to give her orders to defend as the map starts, but
by that time three red bots are already halfway to our flag.

The enemy bots seem to be much more dynamic. If I'm near the flag,
the attacking bots will come back to stop me. And I swear they
respawn at the best locations, while I usually respawn in the worst
place possible.

I should mention, that I've recently been replaying over 1600 amateur
maps, to decide which ones to keep for family LAN parties. To get
through them quickly, I set the score to 1. And I hate to lose.

My sister and I were playing Carry the Flag on Experienced with random
bots and the instagib mutator. (I don't know why it was set to
experienced, especially since my 80 year old father also played. We
were losing until he gave up.) I learned to dread the appearance of
Loque and Tamerlane (accuray of 1.0 and 0.9, respectively).

Tamerlane's Combatstyle is -0.5, and Loque's is 0. What's that mean?
Tamerlane's Alertness is -0.3, while Loque's is +0.3. A negative here
is bad? I'd hate to see him with a positive alertness.

How well does this stuff reset if it's been changed? If I change a
model from default to something like Skaarj, the voice will not reset
when I click the reset button. I have to edit the .ini file. Sounds
funny to have all these women talking like Skaarj and bosses.

My config file shows him with zeroes all the way down.

Archon is bot number one (or zero). Did you change his settings for a
one on one challenge and not change them back?
