5850 crossfire - monitor for both cards?

I was wondering if it's possible to have two 5850s in crossfire, but have a monitor hooked up to each of the monitor (2 monitors), instead of having both monitors hooked up to the top GPU?

My main concern is that with 2 monitors or more hooked up to 1 GPU, the 5x00 series doesn't downclock properly, resulting in moderate load for all situations. So 1 monitor per GPU will solve this downclocking issue.

I won't be able to use my comp for a while, so I can't test this out myself...
