I7 is going to be faster AMD is going to be cheaper the X4 965BE beats the 1090 in gaming.

Neither:

i5 760 if you're just gaming, unless you plan on running lots of graphics cards - the minor performance hit running Crossfire on a P55 board is really negligible, and only really visible on benchmarks, not to the actual user.

Or you can go Phenom II X4 955 BE instead - the X6 is exactly the same architecture but most games don't use 4 cores, let alone 6.

I just built a rig with an i7-950 and I run eq2 and sc2 on Max everything. Very smooth and i think you will find that the i7 outperforms the 965BE.

Rolli59 posted a good link and also make sure you look here:

i7 outperforms the 965BE generally, if you have the pocket make sure you get the 950.

Rubbish, at least on the Anand bench you linked to:

Fallout 3: Phenom wins by 2.4 fps
Left 4 Dead: Phenom wins by 1.1 fps
Far Cry 2: i7 wins by 19.5 fps
Crysis Warhead: i7 wins by 4.9 fps

Even the Toms benches show that even if an i7 wins, the Phenom's fps are still very good, and perfectly fine for smooth gaming.

Are you really telling me for gaming only the i7 is better value? Purely for gaming, all of the benches show perfectly playable frame rates, so why waste money on an unnecessarily platform when the money saved could go towards even better GPUs?

Still, it's the OP's decision - I personally would go i5 760 or Phenom II X4 955 BE and crank up the GPUs (or get a great CPU cooler and go for a monster overclock).

The 965BE is a good processor, and I said that the i7 950 generally outperforms it, which it does. I agree, the performance from the two are very similar and I did mention you need deep pockets to purchase the i7 over the 965BE. Granted, they both can be over clocked with a good CPU cooler, but I frequently see the 950 getting OC'd past 4ghz with little difficulty and the 965BE just around 4ghz? http://www.overclock.net/ and these forums have good resources for that.
