I can get a 470GTX for $280 today.

I originally planned on getting an 5850 to crossfire down the road. Is it worth it to get the 470 now, even if I have to get I new MOBO if I want to Sli?

I should add that if I were to replace the mobo some time later, I could put the old one to use for my family.

That's an amazing deal, but it might cost more than it's worth to sell the 5850 and mobo and get a new mobo. If it was a new build, that would be the way to go hands down, even without the good deal on the 470... It might still be worth it with that discount, though. How much can you sell the 5850 for?

Although if what psycho said is true, then I would say it's worth it too.

I don't have the 5850 yet, just the mobo...I was going to order the video card next week after I get back from a vacation I am leaving for on tomorrow, but I could always make an exception and order it today and have them deliver it to my sister's or something.

jrhii, I'm about to purchase a 470 too. Where are you finding it for $280?????? The best I can find is $305, which is not too shabby either.

WOW thats an amazing deal! I would get it for sure. especially if you're planning on SLI-ing them, you get Nvidia Vision surround as well! You'll get better performance and value add ons compared to ATI! I blew out my mobo last week along with one of my 8800GTs, so I might just pick one up for myself for 270 along with an SLI mobo :)

Theres just one thing holding me back...I bet Nvidia will release a GF104 version of the 470 and call it a 475, in which case the price of the actual 470 will probably drop down to 270. Im off to vacation next week, and I will only really need my new PC by fall when the seasonal games start popping up (COD7, MOH, Crysis 2, eventually Portal 2), so it'd be worth it to wait a bit and get a cooler, quieter and more power efficient GPU in a couple of months for the same price as I'd get em now.

But then again, you can't wait forever, you have to eventually take the plunge :)

Oh well, there will probably be a more efficient 470 down the line which will likely be called a 475. All I'm saying is if you're not hard pressed to buy a new card now, than it'd be wise to hold off until the fall season of games for which we'll need the new cards, and hopefully Nvidia will aslo releas something new. But thats just me... $270 was a great deal for the 470 so whoever bought it will be very happy with it

I bought it the day before I went on vacation to Wasington D.C., and I'll be getting home with it waiting for me in the house tomorrow, so sitting in a hotel in Kentucky-halfway home- is a pretty restless deal.

Even if the 475's come out this fall, and the 470's drop down, I figure that at worst I break even on a deal I would have had to wait months for. I don't think they will drop down to something like $250 or anything.
