Hello,

Due to the mysterious workings of pricing and sales, the AMD Phenom II X3 740 and Phenom II X4 940 are now within $10 of each other. the X3 740 is an AM3 socket, and the X4 940 is a AM2+ socket. My MSI mother board will accept either AM2+ or AM3 CPUs. Is there any advantages to the X3 740 over the X4 940. These are both within my price limit.

Thank you.

there are disadvantages on both sides

x3 740-----------------------------x4 940
tripple core-----------------------quad core
supports ddr3/ddr2-------------DDR2 ONLY

if u can get the 945, definitely go with that

If your motherboard supports ddr3 then by all means go phenom 2 x3 and unlock it if you can.If it supports ddr2 only then phenom 2 x4 940 it is.

x3 740

- has both DDR2/DDR3 capability
- will work in AM2+/AM3 motherboards
- will move to new AM3+ motherboard when they hit the market

The PhII 940 is a fine chip but is limited to AM2+
(DDR3 capability actually exists but function was disabled in early Phenom/PhIIs)

965 to futureproof, and if you can afford it, otherwise the 940 is a great CPU and very OC able.
