Advice on DAS (not NAS) RAID 1

Hello, I'm really having trouble finding a reliable direct attached storage solution.

I want to use my own disks, so I need an enclosure rather than an assembled unit, only need 2 bays, and I want a USB 3.0 connection. I've looked at the specs of a lot of different units, read user comments (many stories of woe, and there seem to be few expert reviews), and also tried one of StarTech's offerings which I returned as it consistently failed to remount. I have a Synology NAS, but I want to use a DAS and use the NAS for backup.

I'm ready to give up as I wonder if DAS RAID is really a reliable technology at any price. Any recommendations welcomed!

Thanks.

John
