I am looking at building a system for recording around TV channels 24 x 7 and then processing them to search for video sequences. Predominant workload would include CPU intensive encoding/decoding + processing and IO intensive video reading/writing.
(Gaming + File Server workload in one machine?)
Here is the config that I am planning to build
Proc : Phenom II X4 965 Black AM3 3.4Ghz 512KB 45NM 125W 4000MHZ
mobo: Asus M4A79XTD EVO Socket AM3/AMD 790X/4DDR3-1800(OC)/ATI
RAM : Corsair XMS3 8 GB 1333 MHz PC3-10666 240-Pin DDR3 Memory Kit CMX8GX3M2A1333C9
Hard Disk : WD Caviar Black WD20000LSRTL - Hard drive - 2 TB - internal - 3.5" - SATA-300 - 7200 rpm - buffer: 32 MB
Since this is my first shot at assembling a machine, any inputs/ suggestions will be of great help.
I made this choice looking around in different forums / reviews..
I am also looking at adding another 2 Hard Disks, 2 osprey TV Tuner cards and a max of 8 GB RAM in the future ..
Total cost comes out to be 665$ ( 165 + 112 + 228 + 160)
Being strapped for cash, I am looking at good value for money
I also need help on the choice of power supply. Do I need to buy a special processor cooling kit since the machine is bound to be running at full capacity all the time. Can someone please suggest a good cooling kit ?
Given your application, you might want to consider the Phenom II x6 (6 core) CPU or even switching to an intel i7 860 or i7 930 quad core with hyper threading.
A good 120mm fan tower cooler would be a good idea. Something like a Sunbeam Core Contact Freezer, Xigmatek Dark Knight or Balder, or Scythe Mugen 2 SCMG-2100. They all run around $40-50.
I didnt see a graphics card listed.
Thanks dndhatcher.. yes, i was considering Phenom x6 2.8Ghz looks like a better option that Phenom x4 3.4GHz (Black). 40 more $ should get me 2 additional cores (good for my multi threaded application)
