Can i use any type of memory?

I have a laptop that is running ddr2 400mhz and i was wondering if i could put ddr3 gskill 1333 8gb into it (link to the gskill ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231342&nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL070111&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL070111-_-EMC-070111-Index-_-LaptopMemory-_-20231342-L01D)

  1. Welcome to Tom's Forum! :)

    Nope, DDR2 and DDR3are not interchangeable, check out http://www.crucial.com/ and select your Notebook and search for compatible RAM. Also, you need to match your current Frequency, CAS, and Voltage if adding more RAM. If you're adding more RAM then use CPU-z to identify what's installed -> http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html
  2. ok so i can only add more ram but bigger such as 2gb, 4gb, 8gb but i cant add faster ram?

  4. Just to check, what exact Notebook do you have?

    Yes, if you ARE 'keeping' any old RAM, you don't want RAM faster or slower or different than what is already installed it must be the same {Frequency, CAS, and Voltage}.

    IF you're NOT keeping ANY old RAM then you're confined to whatever DDR2 your Notebook 'supports' i.e. most DDR2 Notebooks, that I can think of, don't support 8GB individual sticks, and some are capped-off as low as 1GB/stick which is why you must verify before buying any RAM -- compatibility ;)
  5. i have the emachines e627 p.s. if you look up the specs for the laptop it will say single core 1.5 i put in a dual core 1.8 and yes it runs just fine with the dual core in it just to let you know :D
  6. There's (2) two different possibilities and both list 2GB/slot max with 2 slots total, in other words 2X2GB DDR2-800MHz @1.80v max. IMO - get a 2X2GB Kit for $60.

    Verify your Notebook:
    eMachines eME627-5279 -> http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=eME627-5279&Cat=RAM
    eMachines E627 Laptop/Notebook -> http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=E627&Cat=RAM

    Good Luck! :)
