Welcome to Tom's Forum! :)

Nope, DDR2 and DDR3are not interchangeable, check out http://www.crucial.com/ and select your Notebook and search for compatible RAM. Also, you need to match your current Frequency, CAS, and Voltage if adding more RAM. If you're adding more RAM then use CPU-z to identify what's installed -> http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

Just to check, what exact Notebook do you have?

Yes, if you ARE 'keeping' any old RAM, you don't want RAM faster or slower or different than what is already installed it must be the same {Frequency, CAS, and Voltage}.

IF you're NOT keeping ANY old RAM then you're confined to whatever DDR2 your Notebook 'supports' i.e. most DDR2 Notebooks, that I can think of, don't support 8GB individual sticks, and some are capped-off as low as 1GB/stick which is why you must verify before buying any RAM -- compatibility ;)
