I have a dell laptop, inspiron 1564, just wondering what memory is compatible other than the dell own brand as its ludicrously expensive compared to the other memory in the same range, but am i right in thinking dell changed the port so they could monopolize on poor creatures like myself?

Welcome to Tom's Forums! :)

Crucial -> http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Inspi...
Memory Type: DDR3 PC3-8500, DDR3 PC3-10600, DDR3 (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 8GB
Slots: 2
Each memory slot can hold DDR3 PC3-8500, DDR3 PC3-10600 with a maximum of 4GB per slot.*

If you're adding 'more RAM' then you need to use CPU-z to identify the what's installed now -> http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html look at the 'SPD' tab and the right most column to identify Frequency, CAS Timings and size. Otherwise if replacing with all new memory then any of the Kits listed above will work.

Good Luck! :)
