Possible Configurations

I'm in the process of rebuilding my computer, and I'd like to set up a RAID this time around. I currently have a 500GB hard drive (Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3500630AS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive), and just purchased a 3TB hard drive (Seagate Barracuda 7200 3 TB 7200RPM SATA 6 Gb/s NCQ 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal). I'd like to partition ~500GB on the 3TB drive for my photos and other important (read irreplaceable) files. Is it possible to set up a RAID (I think I want RAID 1) using the partition as the primary storage and the 500GB drive as the backup? Either way, what are my best options?

Motherboard is: ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68

I'm installing Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

with raid you need two of the same capacity drives, if you raid them the first drive will be 500gb and the 3tb drive will act as a 500 gb drive as well
