I have a dell e520 dimension and want to upgrade the graphics card, dell tell me they can upgrade with nvidia 1028mb card, but can not tell me model of card. Can anyone tell me which nvidia 1028mb will work in dell e520 or if another card is preferable. System will be running windows 7.

Having a 1GB card is not the issue. Nvidia makes cards with 1GB of memory ranging in price from $50 to $350. Any PCI-E card will work as long as you have a power supply that is big enough to power it.

What version of the e520 do you have? What processor? What resolution is your monitor? What is your budget?

the 8600GT is too slow to use 1GB of memory, you can purchase the 8600GT 256mb version and get the exact same graphic performance. Are you planning to play games with this system or do you just want better performance for day to day use like web browsing and watching DVDs?

Just web browsing and DVDs, perhaps also would like to use second life, if possible. Thanks for note ref only needing 256mb.

look at the ATI 4650, it fairly cheap and offers similar performance to the 8600GT. The 512mb DDR3 is the better version of the 4650, it sometimes comes with 1GB of DDR2. Either one will do the job for you and let you play second life.

The 4650 is about perfect for what you need. It will be fine with your power supply and it is a bit better than the Nvidia cards in that price range and will work well for lite gaming.
That Pentium 4 is what really limits your performance.
