Hdd/ssd duplicator to replace old drive?

Hello,

I want to buy a drive duplicator so I can copy a HDD in a laptop to a smaller SSD and replace it. Would this work? And would it copy the partitions as well?

I would also like to add: I've tried cloning software. And either the software doesn't work or it doesn't clone it properly. I use windows 8, so maybe it's not compatible or I'm doing it wrong. If you have tips or suggestions I'm all ears.
