How monitor splitters work

Hello,
So if I want to display an Excel application on one monitor and a WORD application on the other using a single video card with a splitter cable I can do that?
I thought you had to have another video card or combo card to drive two applicaitons on two monitors from the same desktop.

Most video cards have two main display connectors, often a VGA and a DVI or two DVIs, you can simply connect your two monitors directly to the card rather than using the splitter.
