Hitachi Deskstar 7k1000.b spins up then stops

Hi guys,
I picked up a Hitachi Deskstar 7k1000.b HDT721010SLA360 1TB hard drive cheap, without knowing the condition. When I plug it in and turn it on, it will spin up to full speed for about 5 seconds and then stop, and the computer can't read the drive. I don't think there is any clicking or any unusual sounds. Is the PCB controller at fault here?

Thanks,
JGAN

Damn, the warranty expired in May. Anybody else can help me diagnose this?

I think your conclusion "the PCB" is what's wrong with it. These drives have had the nick name Deathstar for awhile.

Clicking = Actuator is gone
Disk read errors = Platter is on the way out "Smart will say bad"
Spin up then nothing = PCB toast OR Actuator totally disabled/broken.

When you replace a pcb the replacement has to be from an identical hdd down to the firmware revisions. IMHO i would just call it a loss, bought a paperweight that looks like a hard drive.

I know I have to replace the NVRAM chip - that's no big deal, I have done SMC in the past. Are you talking about something different?
