Hitachi Deskstar 7k1000.b spins up then stops

Hi guys,
I picked up a Hitachi Deskstar 7k1000.b HDT721010SLA360 1TB hard drive cheap, without knowing the condition. When I plug it in and turn it on, it will spin up to full speed for about 5 seconds and then stop, and the computer can't read the drive. I don't think there is any clicking or any unusual sounds. Is the PCB controller at fault here?

Thanks,
JGAN

  1. take the drive in a external box and use this test toll for it http://www.hgst.com/portal/site/en/support/warranty/
  2. Damn, the warranty expired in May. Anybody else can help me diagnose this?
  3. I think your conclusion "the PCB" is what's wrong with it. These drives have had the nick name Deathstar for awhile.
  4. Clicking = Actuator is gone
Disk read errors = Platter is on the way out "Smart will say bad"
Spin up then nothing = PCB toast OR Actuator totally disabled/broken.
  5. Would it be possible to replace it with a PCB from a 500GB drive that has the same main chip? This is what I am looking at: http://www.ebay.com/itm/251185927019?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2648
  6. When you replace a pcb the replacement has to be from an identical hdd down to the firmware revisions. IMHO i would just call it a loss, bought a paperweight that looks like a hard drive.
  7. I know I have to replace the NVRAM chip - that's no big deal, I have done SMC in the past. Are you talking about something different?
