I've got a one year old external drive that when I plug in is recognized in the device manager but does not show up in my computer. I can hear the drive attempting to seek about every two seconds and it is spinning. Is the data on the drive recoverable? How should I get it off?
The drive is 500 GB and I can get to the direct SATA connector on the actual drive (novel feature of the goflex series). Is there any way to directly control the drive and see for certain what is mechanically or electronically wrong with it. The diagnostic tools provided by Seagate freeze when attempting to access the drive via USB.
