Why? Do you not know how to interpret all the benchmarks published on numerous websites?

Every low-pair CF/SLI outdoes the high-single card.

HD5670x2 = $180 > HD5830/=GTX460
HD5750x2 = $230 > HD5830/=HD5850
HD5770x2 = $300 > HD5850/=HD5870
HD5830x2 = $400 > HD5870

Only in one title it seems.

It's downhill from there.

And the GTX460 is a mid range card not a high end one.

I would guess that the sli 460 should do well vs a single 5870 in terms of performance.
but....

two gtx460s will cost 460.00 vs 390.00 for the ATI 5870

I have a 5870 and would not trade it for two 260s. even up.

I prefer to have one fast gpu vs SLI or crossfire. There always seems to be more issues and headaches with SLI or crossfire. A single card has less to go wrong in terms of hardware and drivers.

By the time I will feel the need to crossfire my 5870 I know there will be another single gpu card that will be fast enough to do the job so I will sell it and get that card. I'll do SLI again if I have no choice.

This is not to say that have two cards is a bad thing. I like single for other reasons like power heat etc.

SLIed GTX 460s are the equivalent of an HD5970 in performance. HD5870 is the wrong comparison.

I thought he wanted to compare 5870 cf with 460 sli.

I think its pretty clear what it says at the top.
HD 5870 vs GTX 460 SLI

I have not looked at any benches but yea that combo might be better compared to top ATI card.
A 700.00 card vs $460.00 SLI. If the 260s are close then I can see them flying off the shelves. Pretty hefty price difference.

Two GTX 460's in SLI consistently outperform a single GTX 480 (which outperforms the HD 5870). If you're in a postion where you're considering choosing between these two options, I highly recommend you read some of the reviews/benchmarks of GTX 460's in SLI- I've even seen some that show the 460 SLI outperforming 5870's in crossfire. SLI is just scaling so much better these days.

If your current mobo is not SLI compatible, that's a big consideration. If your mobo is SLI capable, go for GTX 460's!!!

2x GTX460's ~ HD 5970 > GTX480 > HD 5870

The choice is clear. ;)

Don't forget to mention the price too. GTX460s cheaper faster. Whats not to like. Power requirements and heat.
