Cpu upgrade or much more expensive mobo bundle?

hi all,
i have a acer aspire pc with amd athlon 64 x2 4200+ 2.2ghz it is the bottle neck of my slightly upgraded system, but do i upgrade the cpu and what is the highest i can go, or do i pay double or more (which will reduce the amount avail for my gpu) and get a mobo bundle? thanks in advance.

  1. What mobo do you have? What RAM?

i have been looking at MSI 770T-C45 ATX. SOCKET AM2+, 5200HT, AMD770 CHIPSET, DDR2, HDMI, DVI with amd athlon ii x2 240 both for £100 and as its dr2 i can use existing ram? any thoughts or is it better to upgrade existing cpu?
  7. I think you need a mATX motherboard, you probably have a mini tower.

Also you can get a faster dual core without changing the motherboard but it's not worth it, IMO, to get a new mobo for a faster dual core - you can overclock your current CPU. A real upgrade would be a triple core.

    I would get this CPU

And a mATX AM2+ mobo. The thing is, you have 2x2G of RAM or 4 sticks?
