Do I need RAM to boot?

I'm building my first computer and everything arrived today except the RAM. I just did an external build test with the motherboard, CPU, heat sink fan and PSU. The cpu fan turned on but there was 3 beeps and nothing displayed on the monitor. Is this because there isn't any RAM or would it be due to something else?

I can't wait until Monday for the RAM to arrive, I want to build this thing tonight!
