I have just purchased a Canon S500 and am in the market for a memory
card (bigger than the 32Mb you get with the camera.
I have my eye on the "Sandisk 1GB Ultra II CompactFlash", the problem
is that the compatibility chart on the SanDisk site does not show the
S500 but it does show the S400.
Can I safely assume that the card will work in the S500? I have
checked the specifications of the S400 vs the S500 and they look the
same.

Probably. (How's THAT for a definitive answer? <g> )
I purchased the card you specified and it works just fine in my 20D.
Before buying the card, you should determine the seller's return policy.

look here:
http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/c [...] delid=9825 It says "Storage Media CompactFlash (CF) Card Type I "
Not completely positive but it seems that the Sandisk 1GB Ultra II
CompactFlash would be a type II (2) which is not the same.

Just breathing confuses me sometimes. I wonder why the list is
incomplete. I would think that sandisk woul;d want to keep that one up
to date. Unless there IS a compatability problem, but any CF type one
should work in any camera that will take it.

Hi,
The answer is definitely YES. I have a new Canon Digital Elph S500, and
am using Sandisk CF cards. The 32 MB that came with the camera is almost
useless. I use a 512 MB card, and have a 1 GB card in case of need. At
the highest res. and least compression, the 512 MB card gives 198
pictures.
Good luck.
