Computer shutdown

Hello, my name is Gerald and my computer is shutting down by itself. at first it thought it was my graphics card cause when i switched it the shutting down stopped. now a week after same thing is happening. my build is as follows: c2d e8400, corsair performance 2x2gb @ 800mhz, thermaltake 550watt power supply, western digital caviar black 500gb hard drive and an xfx 8600gt 512mb graphics(one that was originally on it was an evga 9800gt 512mb)arctic cooler 7 heatsink/fan, and a antec 900 case.

Heat, psu, memory (or its BIOS settings). Let's try the first and the last.

Download CPUID's Hardware monitor, and watch the temps of your cores and your vid card. Game in a window, and watch. Use the log to record temps if that works for you. Report what you see just before it shuts down.

If it doesn't seem temp related, download and run Prime95 and watch. This will again check heat and also exercise memory. If it can, let it run for an hour.

In all cases, stop the PC yourself if core temps exceed 70C or GPU temps exceed 85C, because that's enough heat to require steps be taken to reduce it.

ok i used cpuid hwmonitor and during a 10 min play of fallout 3 the temps went as high as 60c on the cpu, and 62 on my graphics card but didnt shut down. before that though i opened up my computer and took at look at the heatsink i had and saw that the thermal compound was nearly gone. currently i have the default heatsink/fan running in my system and it seems stable. however my computer is slower then it used to be. the best example is it hiccuping during the loading of any page on firefox or any application loading. worst of it playing games. so it probably came down to my cpu overheating(cross my fingers).

Slowdown is likely to be more psychological than heat related, though your BIOS options might have been changed when your cpu shutdown due to heat. Look through them, or load Optimnized defaults or similar.

nevermind the shutdowns are still happening i got ahead of myself haha. when i ran prime95 the cpu temps dropped down to -15c..if thats possible. it may be the cpu i checked the heatsink and heat was eminating from the sink and nowhere else. im planning to buy some thermal compound. is arctic silver any good?

its not the cpu or gpu was wonderin how much of a chance it would be either memory or power related.
