What is a driver on an external storage device

Hello,
I can not open my exteranl storage unit,"My book" my computer trouble shooting says it has a driver problem? now what ?

There shouldn't be a driver problem on an external hard drive , I would go into disk management and see what it says in there about the external hard drive.
