ATI 5770 lots of freezes

I'm going through a ton of atikmdag.sys crashes and hard BSOD crashes. I have two systems here and tested it on another power supply and it still does it. It is highly unlikely the PSU is the issue. One is 550W other is 750W.

I tried fresh installs, drivers 10.4, 10.5 and 10.6. Not solved. I tried clock and memory speeds at 200/400, 300/500, 400/900, 400/1200 and 850/1200.

Hell, it just did a blank grey screen as I'm typing this and recovered (also does pink and light blue).

I tried with fan at 60%, now at 70%. Could it be cooling? I want to test with permanent 70%+ fan speed but will that damage the card?

The infamous R5 plague!
Some might suggest a bios or driver update for your VGA from Sapphire (that works sometimes). But my suggetion is to RMA the card and to get a new one.

Just uninstalled and ran a driversweep and got this as default:

<Profile>
<Caste name="Graphics">
<Groups>
<Group name="Overdrive5">
<Feature name="TimeUnlocked" />
<Feature name="OverclockEnabled">
<Property name="OverclockEnabledProperty" value="True" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="AutoTuneSupport" />
<Feature name="CoreClockTarget_0">
<Property name="Want_0" value="40000" />
<Property name="Want_1" value="60000" />
<Property name="Want_2" value="85000" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="MemoryClockTarget_0">
<Property name="Want_0" value="120000" />
<Property name="Want_1" value="120000" />
<Property name="Want_2" value="120000" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="CoreVoltageTarget_0">
<Property name="Want_0" value="950" />
<Property name="Want_1" value="1000" />
<Property name="Want_2" value="1125" />

Should I change my memory from 120000 to 120500 and voltage from 1125 to 1200?

Okay well hope this works. It's been crashing like CRAZY last night, I'm talking once every minute. It's getting worse and worse.

I was finally able to get the settings like the profile above activated before it crashed and then modified the settings in the 3D section.

I'll let you know how things go.

Is your CPU oc.?,Have you run memtest 86 ?

The cpu is stock and I ran memtest 86 and passed 2 rounds. I just tried removing 1 stick and it just crashed again on 1 stick.

I doubt it's the ram though since some people say using 1 stick solves this and for me it didn't.

I had to remove the CCC because my system is more unstable than ever. Now it crashes within 2 minutes of booting and it's lock ups are reliable. Before I could do 2-3 hours maybe but now I can pretty much place bets on when it will crash.

I really hope it's the card, but like I said it's the second one (first from XFX) and they both did this.

Could it be I built my system wrong?

Try your card in another system (friends ,relatives,etc)and see if it's the card

When I uninstall CCC and have no ATI drivers installed my system is completely stable. It crashes within 2 minutes of installing drivers and CCC and of course all the profiles have not helped.

Could this help to indicate it is the card and not the system? I really hope it isn't the system... I have no idea how to test to figure out which piece it would be.

I have a second system coming in this week and I'll give that a try. Do you know if all this constant rebooting, locking up and BSODing can damage anything else in my system?

They are asking $30 that I don't have. Thanks for your help, I think I will wait until the second system comes to check the card I have now.

Oh okay.. alright I'll get the cpu chipset and give the default CCC 10.6 install another shot.

Edit: It found my wired ethernet card out of date, I use a wireless one however. Can this type of thing cause a conflict?

I'm hesitant to update the wired one since I don't use it and last time I tried updating my wireless card driver it made my internet unusable until I reformatted.

Strange.

So far my system hasn't crashed in 30 minutes. Very very unusual, normally it crashes within 2 minutes.

What I did:

I installed only the 10.6 driver, no CCC.

I also changed the slot used by my card, could it be the slot I had it in before was simply defective?

I thought maybe the card could be loose inside the slot but how can that be if I can game for 3+hours with no crash and yet can't surf the net for 5 minutes?

So far still haven't crashed!

I'm thinking it was the pci-e slot in the mobo that wasn't working. Only explanation I have for this.

Well I did several fresh 10.6 installs. Right now I'm afraid to re-install it in the other slot but I'll have to do that eventually to verify.

I think for now since it's working well (still no crash, idle for 4hrs+) I will wait for SC2, play like crazy hehehe then attempt to re-install and fresh install on the other slot.

Note: this time I have no CCC just the drivers, could this be it?

I found CCC Catalyst to be the best "utility" for my card,it comes as part of driver package..it's there for a rison.I know ..it could be a pain in..sometimes

Take a look at my mobo specifications. It says there is:

1 x PCI Express 2.0 x16,
1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x4 (PCIEX4),
2 x PCI Slots

I don't know the difference between the two PCIE slots. Could it be that I simply installed the GPU in the wrong one?

I just put it into it's original slot, the top one, and it's crashing again. Why would it be doing this?
